Afeka Framework for STEM Education:

Implementing Change in an Educational Process Using the Principles of Engineering Design

In recent years, Afeka has been implementing a transformative change in the education process for its engineering and science students. The goal behind this process is to train graduates with the knowledge, values, and skills required in today's industry. During this implementation, we gained numerous insights, some of which may aid any educational process change, particularly STEM education, across various systems – from the classroom and school level to municipal authorities and national initiatives.

Driven by the shortage of engineers in the Israeli high-tech industry, we believed it was imperative to share our experience with the aim of fostering cooperation among all bodies along the educational continuum stages, ultimately leading to nationwide change.

To this end, we published the Afeka Framework – a proposal for planning and implementing change in the STEM education process throughout the educational continuum, using a unique approach based on engineering design principles. This approach, employed by engineers in product design, can also be applied to planning and implementing changes at the management level.

At the request of many readers, Afeka has formulated a follow-up document to the Afeka Framework, intended to serve as a reference point for defining and implementing a method for imparting skills in any educational process. Titled "Imparting Skills as Part of the Products of an Educational Process: From a Theoretical Model to the Realization of Change," this booklet will soon be available for reading and downloading.
