תואר ראשון בהנדסת תעשיה וניהול בטכניון. תואר שני ודוקטורט במדעי התחבורה בפקולטה להנדסה אזרחית וסביבתית בטכניון. פוסט-דוקטורט בפקולטה להנדסה באוניברסיטת בן-גוריון. תעודת הוראה בהשכלה גבוהה. דיפלומה במערכות תבוניות מאת אוניברסיטאות הלסינקי וברקלי.

חבר סגל באוניברסיטת מערב אנגליה, בריסטול בשנים 2004-2012. הוביל מחקרים עבור קרנות מחקר, האיחוד האירופי, ממשלות, רשויות עירוניות וגופי תעשייה. זכה בפרסים על הצטיינות בהוראה ובמחקר. סגן עורך כתב-העת Journal of Transport & Health. חבר מערכת במספר כתבי-עת אקדמיים.

בשנת 2024 מונה פרופ' אראל אבינרי כחבר בוועדה העליונה למינוי פרופסורים במדעי הטבע, ההנדסה והבריאות במועצה להשכלה גבוהה.
