Purpose/Essence of the Project

Developing a web-based information system that allows food businesses and food NGOs to connect smartly and effectively in order to distribute surplus food in real time. The system strives to minimize food waste, streamline logistical processes, and increase food security among disadvantaged populations.

Describe the Product/Project

The project includes developing a web-based information system that allows food businesses to enter food surplus donations, and allows NGOs to digitally locate, select, and coordinate pickup. The system includes a smart matching mechanism by geographic proximity, type of food, and availability, in addition to designated interfaces for each type of user.

How Was the Idea Born?

The idea for the project resulted from direct exposure to the extent of food waste, along with the difficulties that NGOs face in locating and collecting food donations on time. Additionally, one of the project members’ relatives works in the food business, and has flagged the gap that exists between the available food surplus and the lack of an efficient solution for handing it to NGOs.

Why Did You Choose This Project?

We chose this project in order to deal with the core social problem of food waste and food shortage, and to combine engineering knowledge with a solution of genuine value. The project enabled us to develop a technological system with true potential for change, while addressing a complex logistical challenge that exists on the ground.

Is the Project Connected with a Personal Story of Yours or of Someone You Know?

Yes. One of the team members’ relatives works in the food business, and sees large amounts of quality food being discarded on a daily basis due to the lack of an available donation solution. This understanding highlighted the gap between food surplus and the current need at NGOs, and was a key factor in choosing to develop the project.

What Need Does It Address and for What Population?

The project addresses food waste by creating a platform that connects food businesses that generate surplus food with NGOs that distribute it. The system is designed for restaurants, cafés, and catering companies, along with NGOs and disadvantaged populations that benefit from improved food availability.
