Sustaining Israel’s Engineering Future

Even more than two years since the outbreak of the Iron Swords War, and with military reserve duty rates that remain unprecedentedly high, the need for sustained support continues.

The prolonged conflict has had a lasting impact on Israel’s higher education system. At Afeka, over 42% of our students have been called to military reserve duty since the fighting began, the highest mobilization rate among Israeli academic institutions. For many, balancing extended reserve service with rigorous engineering studies has become an ongoing reality.

As the situation has evolved from an immediate emergency into a sustained national challenge, Afeka has transitioned from short-term crisis response to long-term academic resilience. Early in the conflict, we developed a comprehensive support framework tailored to the diverse needs of our students. This included implementing a flexible hybrid teaching model, offering repeated courses throughout the academic year, expanding academic advising and mentoring, increasing scholarship funding, and providing individual and group mental health counseling. Today, this support system continues to adapt as student needs and national circumstances evolve.

Throughout this period, our goal has remained clear: to uphold rigorous academic standards while ensuring that students can graduate on time and enter Israel’s vital high-tech workforce. Afeka plays a significant national role, producing approximately 10% of Israel’s new engineers each year. With each engineer contributing an estimated $250,000 annually to Israel’s GDP, supporting Afeka’s students is an investment in the country’s long-term economic strength.

The AsOne Wartime Fund

At the height of the crisis, Afeka committed ₪5 million from its own internal resources to ensure academic continuity and immediate student support. This institutional commitment was strengthened by  generous support from numerous institutions, organizations, and individual donors who stood with Afeka during a time of national uncertainty.

Together, these resources enabled expanded scholarships, flexible academic solutions for reservists, enhanced mentoring and advising, and access to critical mental health services, ensuring that students remained on track to graduate and contribute to Israel’s high-tech sector.

Supporting Afeka engineering students means investing in the resilience and future success of Israel’s most valuable resource: Its human capital. Your partnership directly influences the personal and professional futures of our students while reinforcing the long-term stability of Israel’s innovation-driven economy and national security.

By providing sustained support to Afeka reservists, the AsOne Fund helps ensure that they complete their studies and become the next generation of the Start-Up Nation’s engineers, innovators, and leaders.
