Dr. Hoffer has dedicated her research career to combining thermal imaging and machine learning in medical diagnostics, in order to promote innovation at the intersection of technology and healthcare. Her studies include a range of applications – from monitoring tumors and cardiovascular health to the noninvasive diagnosis of liver diseases and evaluation of postoperative complications. Her work has resulted in over 28 publications in leading journals, underscoring her contribution to the field.
At the core of Dr. Hoffer’s research is the use of thermal imaging to evaluate disease states and monitor therapeutic effects, including monitoring heart and vascular structures and analyzing the skin’s microclimate under medical devices. In recent years, she has developed AI-based models for automated diagnosis of diseases such as Crohn’s disease, rectal cancer, and COVID-19 using thermal imaging and deep learning.
Dr. Hoffer’s studies are characterized by significant interdisciplinary collaborations, which have enabled to apply her work in clinical environments, and have led to major achievements in medical diagnostics. She places great importance on training a new generation of engineers and researchers, and brings her research to class through courses she developed in machine learning and control systems, thus exposing students to the latest developments.
In the future, Dr. Hoffer plans to develop portable, AI-enabled diagnostic devices for point-of-care applications in chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, where early detection and regular monitoring are vital.
